I’ll get them out of the way early.
2019 went by like a blur.
I can’t wait to see what 2020 brings.
I have a perfect vision for the new year.
I wish Barbara Walters hosted New Year’s Rockin’ Eve so when the ball drops, she could say “This is 2020.”
OK, ok, I’ll stop. Starting to sound a little too much like Austin Powers. Forgive me, for those of us with an unfortunate propensity to pun, 2020 offers far too much in the way of low-hanging fruit. Get me to a punnery!
I blame it on the time of year. As I write this, my Eagles’ third string survivors are struggling to back into the playoffs, it’s a gray, rainy day and I’m in that quasi-period between Christmas and New Year’s most people are off from work and life hasn’t quite returned to normal.
At any rate, January always feels strange. As a kid, after the excitement of Christmas, all it seemed to offer was cold weather and short days. February too, for that matter.
Now, as an adult, there is still a post-holiday crash, but in a lot of ways, it is a welcome chance to catch my breath before things start to get busy again.
An old sportswriter at heart, I mark the days over the winter with sporting events to carry me to spring. Just after New Year’s is the Dakar Rally. At the end of the month is the 24 Hours of Daytona. By mid-February, pitchers and catchers will report to spring training. And before I know it, the long, cold, dark winter will be over and it will be time to bust out the sticks and hit the golf course.
I’m not much of a resolution guy, but I have a few things I want to check off the list this winter. With my Dad Florida-bound, I hope we’ll have one more trip to the Philadelphia Auto Show to take — an annual tradition since Iacocca was hawking the minivan.
There are also a couple of top-notch auto museums I want to visit with him before he leaves the area. And, I’ve promised to lend a hand in prepping the house for sale. Gotta get all my visits in before the “Hotel Six” closes down and I actually have to shell out hard-earned cash to visit the homeland.
And, of course, we’ll have the last half of the kid’s senior year to enjoy. Concerts and musicals and college decisions, and professionally, I look forward to adding a couple more clients to the fold, and really trying to tackle this self-syndication thing. And this is really the year I’m going to get my own music thing going. I mean it this time. No lie. This is the year.
So, easy as it can be to get the “post-Christmas blues,” I’m going to enjoy this break in the action before things kick back into high gear. After all, it won’t be long before we get those IRS booklets in the mail. Ugh.
So, on that bombshell, here’s hoping you had an amazing holiday and wishing you all the best in the new year.
Ooo, ooo! Thought of another! No, wait, guess I’ll have to wait until next year to use “hindsight is 2020...”
